the storyboard. act 1

So here it is, the rough draft of my storyboard. I tried focusing on the camera movements as much as i could, since i dont know much about them and they really add to the scene, however thisp articular act doesnt require alot of camera movement, just appropriate angles. however colour schemes and such would be a major factor in the overall look of the whole film.

my paradigm

story brainstorming

This is me building on the initial ideas, i never really liked the fact the foundations of the story were very shaky, like the emotive design of the whole thing.

why did the master leave?
why was he building him?
whats their touching connection?

So to sum it all up in an elevator pitch (imagine being in an elevator with some hotshot director/producer that yu want to make your idea a reality... youve approx five lines, one breath to throw it all out there, from start to finish and make it interesting, make it impossible for them to resist)

Its based in a steampunk world, a little lolita girl is playing with her robot (their version of a barbie/ragdoll) it breaks, she cries, take sit to her dad, the factory chief/master, hes fixing it at the tool bench. sirens go off.
everyone evacuates, child is taken away and the toy abandoned.
the toy now misses its beloved child and will do anything to be reunited, even fix itself and break out into the big bad world, where of course there are very real dangers, like the breathers, the natzi like bad guys it suits, they make heavy breathing noises.
The masters cat is also abandoned, and although they dont get along, the cat and robot (trix and cogs) team up to be reunited with their family.

ok so thats the basics.... and a bit longer than an actual elevator pitch. as i get further into the story, and where and what theyd encounter problems/help, i notice its similar to many famous movies, to name a few children ones, toys story and the brave little toaster.
Although i know how my story starts and ends, the in between and climax is difficult to come up with at this point.

group work - paradigm

Well a few classes in and we're already getting elbow deep into the work. yay.
Something i always worried about, especially since we are very close to nearing the end of our higher education and finally at the design industrys doorstep. I always worried i dont have enough group work experience. After all, there no project taken on single handedly, i understand its to not cause confusion when it comes to marking and credit and saving alot of classroom squabbles, but i was debating working on a small group project this semester anyway.
I like how in our time in university weve had a feel for all aspects of a project by doing our own work, this way i know what im good at and what im not, and of course what drives me insane and i want to avoid.... editing being a big one.

So Paradigms (likely going to spell that wrong a million times) is what id consider the basic story idea, a start a middle and an end, its how i begin storyboarding, but turns out theres a real name for these things.

you can learn more here ....
http://understandingfilm.wikifoundry.com/page/3.+The+Classical+Paradigm

thats the simplest version and i think it explains it all perfectly.

So we were all bundeled into groups of approx five, give or take a couple. and given the class task (after a wee presentation and discussion) to create a story paradigm.
how did we start this?
well the usual, who what where when how and why.

below is one of the many messy pages of our pradigm.
basically it was a steampunk style, futuristic world at war, (setting the scene)
it takes place in a factory. really showing off the steampunk.
the story consists of a little robot, abandoned by his master for whatever reason
he then comes alive and trys fixing himself
so his goal is to be not only reunited with his master but also to become complete

hey nobody said it was a good story, just a story.

and me being me..... i took it a little step further. though we all were o the same page coming up with the story, our versions of events like many, differed. our styles, our characters smaller characteristics and even the sequence of events. So this was a fantastic first taster of a group exercise regarding moving image. or storytelling in general.
So from here i think ill build on this wee story a bit more. and allow the others to do the same. whilst still reflecting off one another.

a little intro

Moving image.... ever just know you wont excel at something but you still want to do it? Thats me and this module. im interested in it, but for all yo reading/following, dont be expecting too much. either way youre sure to get some laughs from my mishaps and misjudgments.
This blogs main purpose is for tutor and peer feedback, and self reflection but im also making it (hopefully, in some way) helpful to the complete moving image noob. who knows it may help you all not to mak my mistakes.... yes there will undoubtedly be mistakes.

I have slight animation experience, so im hoping moving image wont be a complete shock to the system. wish me luck folks, this could get interesting.
